General - Most Common Questions

A: Depends on the responding police department. Many cities, municipalities and counties require alarm permits in order for the alarm system to be installed. Some cities will not dispatch police to the scene unless there is an alarm permit for that address as well. Please check with your local authorities to find out if an alarm permit is required for your location.

There are a couple of things you should know about the wireless motion detectors. First, to preserve battery life the light on the motion detector will not turn on. Second, to preserve battery life, the motion is programmed to go into sleep mode if it senses motion 2 times in a 60 second interval. This will cause the motion to sleep for 5 minutes and then it will automatically wake itself up. This will keep the battery from running out too quickly because the motion is not sending signals to the control every time someone walks by during the sleep mode. This can also make testing a little tricky.

To test your motion detector follow these steps:

  1. Arm your system to AWAY
  2. Open and close the front door, as if you are leaving the house. You need to do this, otherwise the alarm system will think that you armed the motions by mistake and will turn them off.
  3. Once arming is complete, stay out of the view of the motion detector for 5 minutes
  4. Then walk in front of the motion detector like normal
  5. The Alarm should sound about 3 seconds after the motion has seen you 6.Then quickly disarm your alarm system so our central station isn’t notified

Sometimes this is a quick fix, and the connection between the thermostat and the panel just needs to be re-set by doing the following:

  1. Go over to the thermostat
  2. Reaching up with both hands, place your pointer fingers on the top left and top right corner of the thermostat and gently pull towards you. The top faceplate will slide off the thermostat opening up some small buttons that you can press
  3. Press the “Reset” button, and you will see the screen react to the press of the button.
  4. Communication should be re-established within 60 seconds
  5. If this did not work, or if your thermostat repeatedly loses it’s connection with the panel, please contact Titan Alarm so we can troubleshoot over the phone or schedule a technician to repair your thermostat.

Please view our moving policy for more information.

The first thing you want to do is walk over to the alarm panel and check the system status. If the alarm panel doesn’t show any errors such as “Smoke Low Battery” or “Smoke Sensor Error”, then the problem is not with any smoke detectors that are connected to the alarm system. The issue will be with the smoke detectors that are in your home that are not part of the smoke detector.

  1. A modem communication failure is typically an indication that when your panel was attempting to do a self test with the central station and the panel didn’t receive acknowledgement. Common causes of this issue are things like the panel having a different “Check for Test period” set than what the module uses. Also updates of a phone carrier network the panel will receive this information and put out this error. Lastly would be a loss in signal strength in the area.
  2. To fix this you will want to
  • Clear the panel status or memory of the event.
  • Perform a panel cell Communication test.
  1. Motion Detectors are a device that are always in search mode until transmission of an event. This is due to the motion being battery operated to conserve battery life the motion is in a search mode to where when something crosses its beams it then ends the search mode and switches its power to the transmitter and transmits the event. The transmission of a signal takes a high level of power from the motion and so the motion goes into a sleep mode for 5 minutes to conserve battery life. At the conclusion of the 5 minute sleep period the motion begins its constant supervision again until the next time it sees motion.

(Special note: As the sensor is always working regardless of the panel if the motion didn’t do this when the panel isn’t armed and you are walking around the battery would become completely drained)

  1. To test your motions you need to simulate that you have left the home.
  • Put the panel into sensor test mode
  • Open and close the front or garage door making the panel think you have left the house
  • Stay out of the way and do not cross the motions path waiting for a total of 5minutes.
  • Cross the motions path a series of beeps or chime for the motion will occur
  1. Go to the main panel and perform the following:
  • Locate the status button on the panel
  • Press the status and listen to the message.
  • Do the procedure to clear the messages on the panel.
  • Press the status again and listen to the message for a fire detection, or Fire warning error.
  • (special note: If you don’t hear anything said about Fire detection or fire warning then the smoke detector that is beeping would be one from the home or location builder and not from the alarm company neither would it be tied into the system.

Your alarm system is a High end Personal Assistant for your House. So like a  phone typically if it is beeping it has a message for you. Most of the time the message that will show up will correspond to a non urgent issue and allow you to clear the message after it has been reviewed. In some cases the message will not clear so as to prompt you to contact our office. To review the message on your panel you will need to access your system status.
